Ecuador is a paradise for adventure travelers and mountain bikers alike. Few routes in the world allow you to descend from the high Andes into the lush cloud forest in just one day. One of the most iconic is the ride from Quito to Mindo, passing through the charming villages of Nono and Tandayapa.
The Route Step by Step
1. Quito – Nono (approx. 30 km)
Starting at over 2,800 meters (9,200 ft), riders leave the capital and pedal into the western valleys of the Andes. The road winds through rolling hills and quiet rural paths, with breathtaking views of the Pichincha volcano.
Terrain: a mix of dirt roads and rural tracks.
2. Nono – Tandayapa (approx. 20 km)
This section introduces you to the magic of the cloud forest. Expect misty landscapes, small waterfalls, and lush vegetation.
Tandayapa is world-famous for its hummingbirds, making it the perfect spot for a rest and a snack while enjoying incredible birdwatching.
3. Tandayapa – Mindo (approx. 20 km)
The final stretch is mostly downhill, taking you from 2,000 meters to around 1,200 meters (3,900 ft). The air gets warmer, the vegetation denser, and the ride more thrilling.
You’ll finish in Mindo, a vibrant eco-tourism hub known for its chocolate farms, rivers, waterfalls, and laid-back vibe.
